This sequence of two lessons explores reading and interpreting timetables. Students are challenged to construct a daily schedule for three astronauts on the International Space Station given a series of activities and duties undertaken. They are then presented with a scenario and order the events, and add and subtract times with the use of a timeline. The sequence is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, presentation slides, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is very valuable for the year 6 mathematics content description about interpreting and using timetables. The lessons challenge students to construct a timetable for three astronauts based upon supplied information about activities and given set of constraints.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in solving a time-related problems for the astronauts as well as interpreting and using timetables from print and digital sources.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
