This resource explores the history of Broome and the rich multicultural community that supported its pearling industry. The site features a virtual museum providing a range of primary source material including photographs, newspaper extracts, historical documents, video and audio recordings. The site explores the history of Aboriginal and foreign workers including official regulation of indentured labour schemes and enforced internship during World War 2 and the personal impact this had on workers and their families. The education resource that accompanies the site provides three inquiry sequences that unpack and analyse the sources provided.

Educational value
  • This resource is of considerable value for several content descriptions in the History knowledge strand of HASS. It addresses the growth of Broome as a result of the development of the pearling industry in Broome and its social impact.
  • The resource is also of value for several content descriptions in the Inquiry Skills strand of HASS. Students have multiple opportunities to process and synthesise information from a range of sources, evaluate the reliability and usefulness of sources and identify and analyse the perspectives of people from the past, in Broome pre- and post- Federation.
  • The resource provides opportunities for Year 6 students to consider the rights and evolving Australia's democratic values as they apply to different groups in Broome over time.
  • The activities also provide opportunities for students to develop the general capability of Critical Thinking, particularly through the historical inquiry process which requires then to question sources and interpret the past.
