This teacher resource is a comprehensive sequence of teacher ideas and student activities that support the arts curriculum in drama and dance, using ideas about space exploration, the universe and the life of an astronaut as stimulus. It includes a link to the video 'Blast off with NASA astronaut Rex Walheim'. This video is the key stimulus for a number of the activities. The sequence of teacher ideas and student activities provides opportunities to explore the drama elements of role-play, characterisation, improvisation, script, design and collaborative devising, and the dance elements of shape, space, time, dynamics and relationships.

Educational value
  • This resource is of significant value for the drama and dance curriculums in the middle primary years. It has relevance for both the Making and Responding strands in both art forms. The teaching and learning activities for drama provide opportunities for students to engage in imaginative and creative 'making', both individually and collaboratively. The resource is also of value in contributing to students exploring the dance elements of body, space, time and dynamics.
  • Activities are clearly sequenced in order to scaffold student learning and there are opportunities to incorporate music and percussion. Some activities provide students with opportunities for responding to and reflecting upon their own and others' artworks, which may contribute to assessment. The resource may also have some value for the general capability Critical and creative thinking.
