Teacher guide Engage to achieve: using mobile technologies to enthuse reluctant readers

TLF ID S7025

This teacher resource describes how a cluster of four primary schools in Launceston, Tasmania, worked together to explore the potential of mobile technologies to engage reluctant and low-achieving readers in year 6. The program they developed exposed students to a range of multimodal texts, developed their understanding of inference, and provided opportunities for online collaborative communication and for working with year 9 reading mentors. The resource is organised in eight sections: Summary; Target student group; Method; Results; Lessons learned; Research base; Further reading and links; and Contacts.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for teachers and schools seeking to improve their year 6 students' attainment of the achievement standard in English as it relates to reading, particularly their capacity to explain literal and implied meaning. The engagement strategy outlined in the resource is also of value for teachers planning implementation of the Literacy strand of the English curriculum for reluctant readers. The survey data in the resource reveals that students enjoyed the reading program, saw its benefits and were aware of an improvement in theirreading and computer skills and a growth in their confidence as independent learners.
  • The resource highlights how the program merged best-practice comprehension strategies and mobile technologies. This merger is of great value for students' development of the Literacy and Information and communication technology (ICT) general capabilities, particularly in relation to progress in the learning continuums that focus on comprehending texts through listening, reading and viewing and on communicating with ICT.
