Teacher guide Focused Improvement in Early Literacy Development (FIELD)

TLF ID S7026

This teacher resource describes an evidence-based strategy in which eight disadvantaged metropolitan schools and 12 remote schools in Western Australia assessed the oral English language and emergent literacy development of their pre-primary (Foundation) students, and used that data to inform explicit teaching of English language and literacy skills. The resource is organised in nine sections: Summary; Target student group; Method; Results; Lessons learned; Next steps; Research base; Further reading and links; and Contacts.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for teachers and schools seeking to improve all aspects of their 'at risk' children's attainment of the Foundation year achievement standard in English. Quantitative data from the eight metropolitan schools showed gains in students' achievement while qualitative data showed improvement in teachers' capacity to explicitly teach aspects of language and literacy. The resource points to collaborative professional learning partnerships combined with support from a mentor or 'expert other' as a powerful way to build teacher capacity. This, in turn, improved children's learning.
  • The resource provides useful links to research, professional learning and an interactive resource pack to help teachers in their implementation of the English curriculum in the Foundation year. It particularly supports content descriptions about realising that some language in written texts is unlike everyday spoken language, recognizing rhymes, syllables and sounds (phonemes) in spoken words, and understanding concepts and features of print.
