Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for teachers and schools seeking to improve their students' literacy results, and their attainment of both the Literacy general capability and the years F-7 English achievement standard in relation to reading. Darlington Primary School's strategy was particularly focused on and effective for those students who were not making the upper levels of achievement on National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests, or whose results had plateaued. The resource details the evidence base the school called upon in developing its strategy.
  • The literacy coach had a pivotal role in sharing proven reading comprehension strategies that addressed low levels of student engagement; raising teachers' expectations of what students can achieve with support; and building whole-school knowledge and understanding of literacy teaching and assessment. One reading comprehension strategy modelled by the literacy coach was particularly valued by students. They described literacy circles as activities where you 'learn a lot' 'because it is fun'.
