Teacher guide Aboriginal Independent Community Schools Numeracy Strategy

TLF ID S7049

This teacher resource describes a strategy to improve the numeracy levels of low-achieving Aboriginal students in 12 remote Aboriginal Independent Community Schools (AICS) in Western Australia. The method section describes the development of an online portal; professional development for teachers, principals and Aboriginal Education Workers; and in-school and remote support. The strategy resulted in improved numeracy outcomes. The report discusses the lessons learned and the next steps planned. It also outlines the research base for the AICS Numeracy Strategy, and provides references and links to relevant readings and a map of WA showing the location of the 12 schools involved.

Educational value
  • This resource may be useful in supporting the mathematics learning area. The resource describes strategies that were found to improve student numeracy outcomes for remote Aboriginal students. These strategies include professional development and ongoing support for teachers, principals and Aboriginal Education Workers by numeracy consultants and using an online portal to make resources available. These resources included diagnostic assessment tasks, pedagogical approaches, relevant research and activities written specifically for the students in the Aboriginal Independent Community schools.
  • This resource might assist teachers in addressing many aspects of the Numeracy general capability. It provides useful guidelines for improving numeracy for Aboriginal learners; for example, it emphasises the importance of developing high-quality resources grounded in current research, connecting home languages with mathematical language and connecting oral and written versions of numbers. It provides references and links to further readings relevant to early years and primary numeracy for Aboriginal students.
