Teacher guide Coaching and whole-school commitment improve numeracy outcomes

This teacher resource describes whole-school strategies to improve numeracy outcomes at Moana Primary School in South Australia. Strategies included appointing a full-time numeracy coach to act as coordinator and form collaborative partnerships with teachers; using diagnostic testing to inform programming; and developing numeracy pedagogy based on the Big Ideas in Number program (Siemon 2006). Outcomes included improved National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) numeracy results and improved teacher pedagogical content knowledge. The resource discusses the lessons learned and outlines research supporting the coaching model.

The role of the numeracy coach developed over time, from teaching model lessons to team-teaching, then to observing and supporting teachers in the classroom as teachers became more confident. The resource includes insights from teachers about the benefits of the partnership and discusses the appointment of the numeracy coach in more detail in terms of the lessons learned.
