Teacher guide Getting Ready in Numeracy intervention program

TLF ID S7052

This teacher resource describes a numeracy intervention strategy, Getting Ready in Numeracy (GRIN). Tutors in Victoria worked with small groups to improve numeracy outcomes for students who had been identified as falling behind in mathematics. The resource describes the method used for primary and secondary students and also comments on the successful use of the program with adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students transitioning to tertiary study. Outcomes included improved results in mathematics assessments such as the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) On Demand test. The resource discusses the lessons learned, outlines the research informing the program and provides references and links to relevant readings.

Educational value
  • This resource may be useful in supporting the mathematics learning area. It describes a numeracy intervention strategy based on small group tutorials. The tutorials were found to improve mathematics learning for primary and secondary students having difficulty with mainstream mathematics lessons due to substantial gaps in their understanding. The sessions allowed students to revisit their classroom mathematics as well as to prepare for their next mathematics class.
  • This resource might assist teachers in addressing many aspects of the Numeracy general capability. It provides suggestions for implementing small group tutorials to improve numeracy for students who have fallen a long way behind their peers. There is a useful discussion of the lessons learned and the research base for the initiative.
