Teacher guide Creating change as a literacy coach

TLF ID S7065

This teacher resource describes how a literacy coach made a substantial difference to students' literacy achievements, teachers' involvement in literacy strategies and whole-school culture at Allendale East Area School in South Australia. Organised in nine sections: Summary; Target student group; Method; Results; Lessons learned; Next steps; Research base; Further reading and links; and Contacts, the resource describes the expanding reach and growing success of the coaching strategy beginning with years 2, 4 and 6 and moving to all students in Reception (Foundation) to year 7, including a group of year 7 boys who completed the Premier's Reading Challenge for the first time.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for teachers and schools concerned about improving their early years and primary students' NAPLAN results and attainment of the English achievement standards in relation to spelling and reading. The strategy described in the resource is particularly relevant for F-10 schools in rural or remote locations. It is also of value for the implementation of content descriptions in the Sound and letter knowledge, Expressing and developing ideas, and Interpreting, analysing, evaluating substrands of the F-7 English curriculum.
  • The advice contained in the resource is particularly useful for schools implementing a coaching strategy using external funding and for in ensuring the program is sustained when the funding runs out. It describes how a literacy coach can so galvanise a school that teachers' enthusiasm and commitment and ongoing student success ensure the program's continuation even when the coach can no longer be employed.
