Teacher guide Evidence Based Observations and Coaching

TLF ID S7067

This teacher resource describes an extended professional learning program implemented in 38 Victorian independent schools using evidence-based observations (EBO) as the basis for in-school teacher coaching to improve students' literacy and numeracy. Organised in nine sections: Summary; Target student group; Method; Results; Lessons learned; Next steps; Research base; Further reading and links; and Contacts, the resource explains how the coaching cycle worked, describing the method used to observe teacher practice and student engagement. It provides data about teachers' and students' positive responses to the program and increased student learning in literacy and numeracy.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for secondary schools concerned about improving students' attainment of the English and mathematics achievement standards to year 10 and their NAPLAN literacy and numeracy results in year 9. The improvement focus described in the resource is on the coach gathering evidence of the teacher's pedagogical approaches; their effect on student engagement and cognitive challenge; and using the evidence from classroom observations to work collaboratively with the teacher to plan for improvement.
  • The resource is of value in relation to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, particularly for the professional engagement domain. It is relevant to all four focus areas of Standard 6 and being involved in a program of the type described in the resource, either as a coach or participating teacher, provides teachers at all levels - graduate, proficient, highly accomplished and lead - with opportunities to extend their own professional learning or that of others.
