This teacher resource is about a project to improve reading outcomes for Aboriginal students in years 2 to 7 in the Gippsland and Mildura areas of Victoria. The Expanded Central Gippsland Koori Literacy Project (ECGKLP) involved 123 Koori students from 19 primary schools and one secondary school. It focused on helping teachers develop literacy learning profiles of the students and link their existing cultural and literacy knowledge with literacy pedagogy. The resource details the assessments used for the profiles and the literacy practices employed to build students' literacy.   • This resource is of value in supporting the reading component of the English curriculum area, particularly the application of reading comprehension strategies within Koori cultural contexts that teachers have learnt to respect and value. It describes the high-reliability literacy teaching procedures (HRLTP) model that underpins the project and identifies the success of systematic, evidence-based HRLTPs for the students involved. The resource also discusses the lessons learned from the project as well as identifying guiding principles for improving reading comprehension outcomes.
  • The resource exemplifies the application of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures cross-curriculum priority to the English curriculum. The project's second focus - linking cultural and literacy knowledge with literacy pedagogy - is particularly well-connected to the priority's organising idea that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' ways of life are uniquely expressed through ways of being, knowing, thinking and doing.
