# The Metrix: comet: decimals

TLF ID L8148

Captain the Metrix spacecraft on a mission to collect valuable minerals from the dust of a comet's tail. Use the metric measurement tables for mass, length and capacity to help you make unit conversions involving decimal numbers. The decisions you make will impact the success of the mission. (For example, to capture mineral particles with a mass of 10 g, select the equivalent collector in kilograms.) Race to beat two other spacecraft to collect the riches in the comet's tail. This learning object is the fourth in a series of six learning objects.

#### Educational details

Key learning objectives
• Students apply knowledge of relationships in metric measurement by converting between units of mass, length and capacity.
• Students interpret terminology for mass, length and capacity to solve problems.
Educational value
• Provides opportunities for students to practise conversions of mass, length and capacity units involving decimal calculations.
• Presents metric tables that show the relationships between units, and highlight decimal place value concepts.
• Provides feedback that supports the development of strategies for conversion between units.
• Encourages repeated use by providing three random sets of tasks.
