# Face painter: predicting faces

Identify polygons on a range of prisms and polyhedra such as a cuboid, square pyramid or hexagonal prism. Picture in your head all sides of a solid. Estimate how many faces of each shape the object has. Rotate it to see and paint all of its faces. This learning object is one in a series of four objects.

Key learning objectives
• Students see the relationship between 2D figures and 3D objects.
• Students identify 2D regular shapes.
• Students visualise what is unseen in the 3D object.
Educational value
• Requires students to visualise and estimate the number of each different 2D shapes making up the faces on a 3D object.
• Enables students to identify 2D shapes (equilateral and isosceles triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapeziums and hexagons)) on the faces of 3D objects.
• Enables students to rotate a 3D object.
• Enables the student to paint faces within a 3D object.
• Encourages cross checking of the estimate with the solution.
