Learning objects Wild ride: race day

TLF ID L483

Prepare a bike for racing. Use a simulator to test how performance is affected by frame type, tyres, wheel size and gears. Test how different combinations affect speed and handling. Then choose equipment and gear shift tactics best suited to track conditions on race day. This learning object is one in a series of four objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students relate cycling performance to forces, which vary according to wheel size, tyre pressure and tread.
  • Students investigate how gears affect operational efficiency in cycling.
  • Students relate cog size to speed and energy efficiency of a cyclist over a range of gradients and surfaces.
Educational value
  • Relates cycling performance to variables such as wheel size, tyre pressure, tread and gears.
  • Simulates computer modelling procedures and data measurement.
  • Challenges students to optimise performance in a timed race scenario.
