Learning objects The foul food maker: questions 2

TLF ID L213

Use a vending machine to get an awful meal such as fly soup, worm pasta or yucky duck. The machine serves a meal randomly from four slots. Work out the likelihood of getting each type of meal. Then choose a matching probability word: impossible, unlikely, equal, likely or certain. Run simple probability experiments. Compare actual results with theoretical probability. Look at data tables that describe probability using fractions, decimals and percentages. Fill in the blanks with equivalent values. This learning object is one in a series of four objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students match probability situations with everyday chance words.
  • Students explore the tension between theoretical probability and randomness.
  • Students express theoretical probabilities as fractions, decimals or percentages.
  • Students explore variations in samples and compare these with the theoretical result.
Educational value
  • Poses a series of questions (using the language of chance) about theoretical outcomes, inviting student response.
  • Provides immediate feedback in response to student answers.
  • Enables students to compare theoretical and experimental probability via tables and graphs.
  • Allows students to fill in the blank decimal or fraction equivalent values for the probability expressions in the data tables.
  • Provides the opportunity for students to conduct and record results of repeated trials of 100 outcomes.
  • Links the frequency of experimental outcomes with the associated fractional, decimal and percentage probability values.
  • Provides students with the opportunity to print theoretical and experimental probability tables.
