# The Metrix: asteroid

TLF ID L8147

Captain the Metrix spacecraft on a mission to save Earth from an asteroid collision. Use the metric measurement tables for mass, length and volume to help you make unit conversions. Some of these will involve rates, such as speed and frequency. (For example, to ensure a successful launch, select the rate of concentration of fuel additive that is equivalent to 5 litres per kilolitre.) Beat two other spacecraft to the asteroid to save Earth. This learning object is the third in a series of six learning objects.

#### Educational details

Key learning objectives
• Students apply knowledge of relationships in metric measurement by converting between units of mass, length and capacity.
• Students interpret terminology for mass, length and capacity to solve problems involving other units and rates.
Educational value
• Provides opportunities for students to transfer their knowledge of converting whole numbers of units of measurement for mass, length and capacity, to rates and other measurement units.
• Presents metric tables that show the relationships between units, and highlight whole number place value concepts.
• Provides feedback that supports the development of strategies for conversion between units.
• Encourages repeated use by providing three random sets of tasks.
