Rubbish from the cabbage garden', 1888
This black-and-white cartoon satirises Victoria's actions in 'the Afghan incident' of 1888, in which Chinese immigrants on board the SS Afghan were refused entry to Vic and then tried to land in New South Wales. It shows the Vic premier, Duncan Gillies, leaning over a wall and tipping a barrel full of people into the garden of the NSW premier, Sir Henry Parkes. Chinese clog sandals, 19th-century Chinese clothing and long pigtails can be seen on the figures falling from the barrel. The pen-and-ink drawing, signed Phil May, measures 34 cm x 24 cm.
