construct two-way tables and discuss possible relationship between categorical variables (AC9M10ST04)

Elaborations
  • using two-way tables to investigate and comparing the survey responses to questions involving five-point Likert scale against \(2\) different categories of respondents; for example, junior compared to senior students’ responses to a survey question
  • recording data in two-way tables and using percentages and proportions to identify patterns and associations in the data
  • conducting a litter survey around the school, considering the relationship between different categorical variables such as the day of the week as canteen specials might lead to different types of litter or the weather due to hot days leading to more ice blocks and cold drinks being sold
General capabilities
  • Critical and creative thinking Critical and Creative Thinking
ScOT terms

Multivariate analysis,  Categorical data,  Two-way tables

reSolve: Mathematical modelling: What makes us happy?

In this sequence of five lessons, students investigate the relationship between wealth and happiness using real-world data, constructing and interpreting scatterplots, lines of best fit, and r^2 values. They compare models, make predictions, and consider the limits of correlation in explaining real-world phenomena. Key ...

Deciding dosages

This set of learning activities challenges students to develop a mathematical model that can be used to determine optimal dosage regimes and supports students to better understand medical advice. The module includes a comprehensive teacher guide, curriculum links, exemplars of student responses, vocabulary lists and printable ...

Would you rather …?

In this lesson students collect data, creating and analysing two-way tables, by playing the popular game ‘Would you rather…?’ Students collect data in a two-way table, extract and describe data in two-way tables using boolean statements, identify and begin to analyse/explain association between two variables.

reSolve: Probability - Forensic Investigations

This lesson investigates real-world applications of probability. Students examine real-world case studies of probability being applied in misleading ways. They assess and explain the flaws in the mathematical methodology used. There is also an emphasis on accurate and inaccurate ways of communicating mathematical concepts ...

reSolve: Trigonometry: Rule of Twelfths

This sequence of three lessons gives students the opportunity to explore how tidal variations can be modelled and predicted using trigonometric functions and approximated with useful 'rules of thumb'. Students use real tidal data to explore how sailors make predictions at sea, draw their own graphs using a range of approximation ...

reSolve: Statistics - The Taste of Water

This lesson introduces students to informally conducting experiments to test hypotheses. Students test whether they can taste the difference between tap and bottled water by collecting and interrogating experimental data. They then compare their findings with the likelihood of their findings being obtained by chance. The ...

What are pixels?

Meet Kevin Systrom and Piper Hanson as they explain how digital images work. What are pixels, those tiny dots of light, made from? How are colours created and represented? What does Kevin say about the way mathematical functions are used to create different image filters. What is the difference between image resolution ...

Off the scale

This lesson introduces students to the idea of a log scale, a seemingly perplexing way to present data. The lesson begins with an exploration of examples when a linear scale is inappropriate and concludes with a plotting activity using authentic data from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Australia's Trade through Time

Using an interactive timeline created by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, this teacher guide provides 12 series of learning experiences that engage students in the analysis and interpretation of data about Australian trade from 1900 to the present day. Students study videos, tables, images and texts in order ...

TIMES Module 8: Statistics and Probability: data investigation and interpretation, year 10 - teacher guide

This is a 29-page guide for teachers. Box plots are introduced as another graphical tool and are used for comparisons of data. Scatter plots are used to explore relationships between quantitative (usually continuous) variables.

How wrong?

In this lesson, students explore the importance of measurement errors by considering the ‘coastline paradox’ and real-world applications, including in aviation, sports and space exploration. They learn how measurement errors compound in volume calculations by exploring the impact of rounding when finding the volumes of ...
