recognise that 100% represents the complete whole and use percentages to describe, represent and compare relative size; connect familiar percentages to their decimal and fraction equivalents (AC9M5N04)

Elaborations
  • recognising applications of percentages used in everyday contexts; for example, the bar model used for charging devices indicating the percentage of power remaining; advertising in retail contexts relating to discounts or sales
  • creating a model by subdividing a whole; for example, using \(10\) x \(10\) grids to represent various percentage amounts and recognising complementary percentages, such as \(30\)% and \(70\)% combine to make \(100\)%
  • creating a model by subdividing a collection of materials, such as blocks or money, to connect decimals and percentage equivalents of tenths and commonly used fractions \(\frac12\), \(\frac14\) and \(\frac34\); for example, one-tenth or \(0.1\) represents \(10\)% and one half or \(0.5\) represents \(50\)%; recognising that \(60\)% is \(10\)% more than \(50\)%
  • using physical and virtual materials to represent the relationship between decimal notation and percentages; for example, \(0.3\) is \(3\) out of every \(10\), which is \(30\) out of every \(100\), which is \(30\)%)
General capabilities
  • Numeracy Numeracy

Fractions, decimals and percentages: Year 5 – planning tool

This planning resource for Year 5 is for the topic of Fractions, decimals and percentages. Students recognise that fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are equivalent ways to represent and make sense of quantities. They learn about the different contexts where it makes sense to use one of the constructs to express ...

Number sequence: Year 5 – planning tool

This planning resource for Year 5 is for the topic of Number sequence. Students compare and order fractions and mixed numbers with the same and related denominators and demonstrate their understanding of the values of fractions on a number line.

Fractions: Year 5 – planning tool

This planning resource for Year 5 is for the topic of Fractions. Students utilise their understanding of the magnitude of fractions to add and subtract a variety of fractions. Students need to be able to understand fraction notation (e.g. the meaning of the numerator and denominator) and represent repeated addition and ...

More than, less than ½ - Calculate

This game, played with ten-sided dice, in pairs or small groups, provides students with opportunities to make, simplify and compare fractions with different denominators. Students aim to collect fractions that are more than a half and less than a half, recording their rolled fractions on a score card as the game progresses.

Café Fractions - Calculate

In this task, students take the role of the owner of a cake wholesaler, baking and supplying cakes to local café businesses. As café owners order their weekly cakes by the slice, students are required to add unit fractions together to calculate total cake orders. They then solve problems associated with subtracting fractional ...

Decimats - Calculate

This activity allows students to develop an understanding of decimals and how they connect to fractions and the area model. It enables them to make comparisons between decimals and their sizes and build a greater understanding of what makes a larger decimal and smaller decimal. The decimats provide them with a representational ...

Fraction War - Calculate

This game, played in pairs with a of dominoes, challenges students to create fractions and compare their values. The player with the higher value fraction wins each round and the associated domino. The game is played until one player owns all the dominoes.

Operations: Foundation to Year 9

This comprehensive resource describes the progression of ideas that cover addition and subtraction of integers; multiplication and division of integers; the four operations with common and decimal fractions; and operation applications with percent, rate and ratio.

Pattern & Algebra Year 5 - Calculate

The focus of this activity is to discover if students can interpret information in a table and use fractions (with the same denominator) to represent different amounts. We want to encourage students to use what they know about to interpret the information in the table before applying their understanding of fractions.

Introduction to probability

This is a website designed for both teachers and students in year 5, and addresses components of the probability topic. It is particularly relevant for discussing chance experiments where the probability of events is equally likely and for describing those events using fractions. There are pages for both teachers and students. ...
