  • This resource is useful for supporting the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 9 relating to the influence of the Industrial Revolution on the transatlantic slave trade. It outlines the requirements for land and plentiful cheap labour so that raw materials such as cotton, sugar and coffee could be supplied for manufacturing in Britain. The American slave plantation developed as a result of the demand for more raw materials and luxuries in industrialising Britain.
  • The resource is useful for depicting the lucrative nature of the slave trade. The 1,428,000 slaves kidnapped and transported from Africa between 1761 and 1808 by British traders are estimated to be worth about 8 billion pounds in today's money.
  • This resource is useful for the development of historical skills. Students select and use a range of communication forms to develop a presentation about the slave trade in the 18th and 19th centuries based on the resource. It should include a map of the slave trade, the value in money of the slave trade, the work of the slave plantations, the amount of land under cultivation and the destination of the crops.
