This is an interactive resource about fractions. It presents students with a fraction and its equivalent visual representations as both the shaded portion of a shape and as the location on a number line. Students are also presented with two other empty shapes, and are required to divide each blank shape into equal portions and add colour to the portions to create a fraction equivalent to the given fraction. As students fill in the portions of a shape with colour, an arrow linking the shape to the number line indicates the fraction being represented. Students can choose from drop-down menus to work with squares or circles and to create one or two equivalent fractions.

Educational value
  • This interactive resource is useful for the Australian Curriculum content description in year 6 mathematics about comparing fractions and locating them on a number line. It can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standard about locating fractions on a number line.
  • The resource supports students in exploring the relationship between the value of a fraction and the proportion of the area of a shape, and is useful for providing practice in generating equivalent fractions.
  • It provides immediate feedback and students can make repeated attempts if an equivalent fraction is not correctly generated. The activity automatically records how successfully the fractions are generated. A score based on the number of attempts can be shown in a pop-up window.
  • The Learner and Help tabs, which can easily be accessed from the Activity screen, provide detailed and useful information about completing the activity effectively.
