It's illegal to ride a bike without a helmet in Australia. Sue Abbott and Dr Jake Olivier differ on this issue. This video is designed for students presents both points of view as a stimulus for students to reach their own conclusions. The video discusses how laws are made and explores different points of view on whether laws such as this should be made or should be left to the individual. The video also discusses the power of lobbying in a democracy.

Educational value
  • This resource is of significant value in supporting the teaching of Civics and citizenship in Year 3, in particular, referring to the content description of discussing how and why decisions are made democratically in communities. This resource provides two opposing arguments of the mandatory wearing of helmets within Australia. The cyclists discuss the reasoning behind their decisions.
  • It may also be of relevance for the Year 4 Civics and citizenship content description of why laws are important. This resource can be used as a discussion point to whether students agree/disagree with the mandatory wearing of helmets and can lead onto a persuasive argument about whether laws are important.
  • The resource provides a useful example of the role of lobby groups as it relates to Year 5 Civics and citizenship and as a stimulus for exploring how laws protect and impact on the lives of citizens.
  • This resource also supports the Year 8 Civics and citizenship content description, which refers to citizens taking direct actions against Australia's democratic system. Teachers can use this film to explore how laws are made, how they are changed and why they are important.
