This study guide explores the modern practices in sustainable farming and its role in the future of food production. It investigates the challenges Australian cattle and sheep farmers’ face and how science can help them to meet the challenge of sustainably feeding the world with a growing population and climate variability. The guide follows the Five E’s instructional model for learning.

  • The Future Foods resource investigates the sustainability of farming sheep and cattle to feed the growing population of Australia and the world. It explores how Australia’s variable climate impacts farmers and the choices they make when choosing breeds of sheep and cattle to suit the environment.
  • This resource is relevant for the biological sciences elements of the year 5 and 6 science curriculum as it relates to the behavioural and physical adaptations of sheep and cattle and how cross breeding produces new breeds of sheep and cattle that are more suited to the environment.
  • The student activities in this resource use a number of inquiry skills such as; testing, predicting and gathering data. Posing questions to clarify practical problems and focuses on the cross-curriculum priority of sustainability.
