Teacher guide reSolve: Patterns in a circle

This sequence of lessons explores the various possibilities for constructing a circular pattern using different colours. Students decorate party hats using two and then three different coloured pompoms and investigate the combinations that arise. They then create circular patterns using four colours and identify similarities and differences between these patterns. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, discussion points and templates for students. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the Foundation year mathematics content description about sorting familiar objects and copying, continuing and creating patterns with objects and drawings. Students copy and create patterns by drawing and modelling pompoms around a hat, they are then asked to compare patterns and identify similarities and differences.
  • The resource is of significant value for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides opportunities for students to recognise and use patterns and relationships and to describe and continue patterns around a circle.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
