This sequence of three lessons explores ratios through the context of mixing paint. Students investigate how ratios express a multiplicative relationship between two measures and under what conditions the proportions remain constant when the numerical values of both quantities change. The lessons are outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points, suggested strategies and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 7 content description about recognising and solving problems involving simple ratios. Students are encouraged to work through a range of strategies and models involving ratios to solve problems involving mixing paint.
  • The resource is also very valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides multiple opportunities for students to apply proportional thinking, by visualising and describing the proportions and ratios in the context of solving a series of paint mixing problems.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
